ATP

LO: What is ATP?

Adenosine Triphosphate

  • It is the ENERGY CURRENCY of the cell.
  • ATP is hydrolysed when a cell needs energy. ATP -> ADP + Pi + ENERGY
         -reversible reaction

        ADP + Pi + ENERGY -> ATP

  • ATP is a small molecule - it produces energy in "small packets"
          -> A single molecule may be enough to supply the energy needs of a single chemical reacion.
  • Constantly being used and recycled by every living cell.
  • Soluble within the cell and so can easily be transported from site of energy release to where it is needed.
